La Union honors veterans, modern heroes in Araw ng Kagitingan celebration

LUNA, La Union (PIA) – La Union commemorated the 82nd Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on April 9 with a heartwarming ceremony that paid tribute to the heroism of its veterans and saluted modern-day heroes who safeguard the community.

Held at the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines-North Luzon Shrine and Park in this town, the event resonated with deeper meaning as it coincided with Philippine Veterans Week.

Officers and personnel from various groups, including the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office-La Union, La Union Police Provincial Office, the Provincial Government of La Union, and Luna's local government, joined in the flag-raising ceremony.

Around 120 war veterans received a 21-gun salute, a gesture of profound respect for their selfless sacrifices.

Police Regional Office 1 chief, Brig. Gen. Lou Evangelista, took the stage and implored the community to find inspiration in the veterans' bravery.

"Let the courage, heroism, and patriotism of our soldiers who fought for our freedom be a constant source of strength. Let us strive to achieve genuine self-determination for our nation, just as they did," Evangelista said.

While honoring war veterans, Vice Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega extended recognition to the province's police officers, lauding them as "modern-day heroes" who tirelessly ensure public safety.

"Our police officers consistently go above and beyond to maintain peace and security in our communities. They play a vital role in upholding the freedom we cherish, not just for ordinary citizens, but for everyone," Ortega said.

The celebration underscored the importance of unity in protecting freedom and sovereignty.

Other speakers emphasized the value of "bayanihan," a Filipino term for communal cooperation, as essential for achieving the provincial government's goals.

David Abad, president of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines San Juan Post, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all veterans, both Filipino and American, who fought for the Philippines' liberation.

"To my fellow veterans from the Philippines, the United States, and our allies, I am profoundly grateful for your sacrifices. It is an honor to stand beside you today," Abad said.
