Info officers strategize on how to promote Zambo Peninsula

DIPOLOG CITY (PIA) – In pursuit of their mandate to empower citizens with timely, accurate, and relevant information, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) – Zamboanga del Norte Information Center gathered the information officers (IO) from the different municipalities and cities to discuss strategies on how to promote Zamboanga Peninsula as a vibrant destination.

Zamboanga del Norte Information Center Manager Emmanuel Taghoy discussed the importance of information and communication work, emphasizing its impact on public views.

He stressed that IOs serve as the middleman between the government and the general public, and in order for the public to appreciate the efforts the government is making for its citizens, the citizens must first know about these efforts to begin with.

“As government information officers, our job is not only to cascade information from the top to the grassroots, but also to give feedback from the grassroots to the top,” Taghoy explained.

He also highlighted the two-way nature of communication and how an effective communication strategy requires work from the government, the people, and, of course, the IOs to bridge the gap between the two.

As an icebreaker, IOs offered some lesser-known trivia about their localities, many of which were coastal towns and offered a variety of one-with-nature experiences, while others highlighted their local specialties.

After hearing from the different municipalities, the discussion turned towards the strategies centering on the Regional Development Plan’s vision of making Zamboanga Peninsula the country’s center for the agri-fisheries industry through focusing on the country’s on the region’s contribution to the attainment of the country’s goal of economic transformation for a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient society, though it was just a brief runthrough of the program's summary.

Basilan Information Center Manager Nilda delos Reyes also gave a lecture on their best practices in Isabela City, as their Barangay Information Officers Network (BION) is a 3-time awardee of the Regional Best BION Awards, in the hopes that MIOs from Zamboanga del Norte might replicate them.

She stressed that transparency and good governance is number one in the top nine priority agenda of mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin Hataman, and that the BION is alligned with this agenda as she believes that information is vital to empower her constituents.

The meeting ended with plans for capacity building for their barangay information officers in pursuit of strengthening the information highway down to the grassroots, especially in remote areas, like the municipalities of Baliguian and Sibuco. It was also agreed upon that further strategizing will be done one-one-one with the LGUs to have a more comprehensive discussion regarding the RDP’s programs and pillars.

PIA also offered IOs the chance to guest and co-host a few Talakayan episodes wherein they could discuss the programs and events of their locality. (RVC/PJF/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
