Pangasinan health office warns against head lice infestation

DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – The Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) is urging residents to be aware of head lice, especially as children spend more time outdoors during the summer months.

Head lice are small, wingless insects that feed on human blood from the scalp.

While not a serious health risk, they can cause itching and discomfort.

"Head lice spread easily among children playing together. While not a major health risk, excessive scratching can lead to skin infections," said Dr. Cielo Almoite, Provincial Health Officer I.

Almoite stresses the importance of good hygiene in preventing lice.

Regular baths and frequent shampooing can help keep lice at bay.

If someone has lice, avoid sharing combs, hats, pillows, and close head-to-head contact to prevent the spread of infestation.

Additionally, regularly washing bedding and towels helps prevent lice from living in fabrics.

According to the Department of Health, lice thrive in warm weather, multiplying faster on hot and sweaty scalps.

Outbreaks are more common during the summer months.

Alyzza Quinto from Sta. Barbara town shared how following the PHO's advice helped her lice-infested niece.

"Daily baths and using a lice comb made a big difference," she said. (JCR/AMB/JSZ/PIA Pangasinan)
