Pangasinan steps up rabies vaccination efforts after case surge

DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – The Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) is urging pet owners to get their animals vaccinated against rabies following a rise in cases this year.

Three rabies deaths have already been reported in 2024, compared to just one in the same period last year.

Dr. Cielo Almoite, Provincial Health Officer I, emphasized the urgency of pet vaccination during a recent virtual presser of the Philippine Information Agency.

"Tragically, all three victims succumbed to rabies after getting bitten by infected dogs," said Dr. Almoite.

The victims included an 82-year-old from Aguilar, a 63-year-old from Bayambang, and an 11-year-old from Sison.

Dr. Almoite stressed the importance of collaboration between pet owners and local government units in controlling the spread of rabies.

To address this issue, the Provincial Veterinary Office is organizing a free veterinary medical mission titled "Serbisyong ang Galing Para sa Alagang Aso at Pusa".

This month-long program will provide free rabies vaccinations, deworming, and other essential pet care services.

Free veterinary medical mission schedule:

  • April 18: Sta. Barbara - Municipal Agriculture Office Ground
  • April 19: Lingayen - Barangay Hall Estanza
  • April 23: Mangatarem - Municipal Gymnasium
  • April 24: Rosales - Municipal Covered Court
  • April 25: Umingan - Municipal Auditorium
  • April 26: Manaoag - Barangay Hall of Lelemaan
  • April 30: Bayambang - Covered Court Zone 2

In addition to vaccinations, the missions will offer pet care consultations, information sessions, and even spaying/neutering services.

Arrianne Paningbatan, a pet owner from Mangatarem, echoed the importance of pet vaccination for both animal and public health.

She plans to take advantage of the free services and bring her two dogs to the mission on April 23.

Paningbatan also emphasized the significance of proper pet care, including a healthy diet, comfortable shelter, and regular grooming.

Through collaborative efforts between pet owners and local authorities, Pangasinan can effectively control the spread of rabies and ensure the safety of its communities. (JCR/AMB/JCDR/PIA Pangasinan)
