LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) – With the aim to further encourage reading among the youth in communities, the Ilocos Norte Provincial Library started its first summer reading program that will run from April 15 to May 17.
Led by Eric Coloma, provincial librarian, the initiative is anchored on the philosophy of 'reading for fun.’ Given how public libraries have a longstanding practice and advocacy in establishing reading programs, he said that similar projects are also being implemented across the country and globally.
This has prompted the provincial library to put up a project that caters to the local community, with a specific target on toddlers, daycare and elementary kids, teens, and even parents.
Coloma said, “Parents are tasked with accompanying their children to drop by the library on Saturdays or one or two times a week.”
The library also wants to promote the practice of ‘reading for fun’ during the summer season. Visitors can enter on a walk-in basis and will be given the opportunity to browse for any reading materials available.
“It’s not just a library. It’s a community center where you can come to research, read for fun, gain knowledge, hone your values, and read with your kids. It’s for the community, regardless of age or status in life,” said Coloma.
