Big-ticket infra projects seen to boost Ilocandia’s social, economic growth

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, April 15  (PIA) -- The Ilocos Region will see an increase in its infrastructure spending for 2024 and 2025, earmarking approximately P55.65 billion and P56.22 billion, respectively, data from the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) 1’s Regional Development Report 2023 shows.

The figure is a significant bump from the P23.49 billion spent for infrastructure projects in the region for 2023 and will facilitate productivity, trade, connectivity, and promote social inclusion.

According to the report, there are four flagship projects that will be constructed under the said funds, which are included in President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s Build-Better-More program.

Headlining these flagship projects is the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) Extension Project from the expressway’s current last exit in Rosario, La Union to San Juan town, a frequent tourist destination in the province.

The said project will offer physical connectivity and lessen travel time for motorists and passengers plying the said route and will have a budget of P23.36 billion.

The second major infrastructure project is the Ilocos Norte-Ilocos Sur-Abra Irrigation Project, formerly known as the Ilocos Norte Irrigation Project - Stage 2, which will be built with a budget of P25.73 billion.

The third major project is the Laoag International Airport Development Project worth P15 billion, while the fourth and last major project is the Ilocos Sur Transbin Project worth P5.98 billion.

The flagship projects are seen to reduce transportation costs, encourage innovation, and attract foreign direct investment.

NEDA 1 Assistant Regional Director Irenea B. Ubungen says the projects form part of the Regional Development Plan (RDP) 2023-2028 and the AmBisyon Natin 2040, which both serve as the region’s blueprint for sustainable development.

“Ultimately, we do not only strive for economic growth but for building communities that can ensure a brighter future… raising a deeper understanding of our regional dynamics and guiding us toward a future where every individual thrives,” Ubungen said. (JCR/MJTAB/CCMT, PIA La Union)
