La Union police distribute free helmets to reinforce road safety drive

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) –  The La Union Police Provincial Office (LUPPO) distributed helmets to five motorcycle riders, particularly for those who work in delivery and courier chains and are unable to purchase new ones, to increase road safety.

This initiative took place near the San Fernando (Poro Point) Community Airport in this city on April 16, 2024.

Lieutenant Colonel Jake Isidro, officer-in-charge of the Police Community Affairs of LUPPO, highlighted that they prioritize motorcyclists who put in efforts to provide for their families.

"Our priority here of course is the delivery riders, who drive every day and have a hard time on the road just to help and give their family a good life," Isidro said.

Along with the provision, a checkpoint and information campaign were carried out at the said site, emphasizing the proper use of safety gear for road safety ahead of Road Safety Month in May.

One of the problems of the province, on the other hand, is road crash incidents.

According to LUPPO, a total of 171 road crash incidents involving motorcycles were reported from January to mid-April 2024.

A total of five helmets and 10 sweatshirts are given to motorcycle riders along the Canaoay Road in San Fernando City, La Union to ensure their safety and security while driving.

Thus, motorists are strongly reminded by law enforcers to exercise caution and always wear proper protective gear to prevent fatal road accidents.

Eduardo Casugay, a motorcycle rider from Barangay Lingsat in this city, thanked the police for the helmet and gave some road safety tips.

"To my fellow drivers, please refrain from driving as though we are in a race and try to overtake; you will eventually catch up to them," Casugay said.

Furthermore, the LUPPO adds that helmets will also be distributed in other La Union towns to further their advocacy on road safety. (JCR/AMB/SGR/KKLG, PIA La Union)
