LTO holds free theoretical course for student drivers

DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – In response to the alarming number of road accidents, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) regional office is taking a proactive stance by promoting responsible driving habits and empowering aspiring drivers with vital road safety knowledge.

With an average of 33 road crash fatalities daily, the urgency to address this critical issue is undeniable.

Romel Dawaton, officer-in-charge supervising transportation regulation officer of LTO Dagupan City, emphasizes the significant role that a lack of awareness of traffic laws plays in contributing to these accidents.

Often, this knowledge gap stems from the absence of proper theoretical driving course (TDC) lessons.

"Ensuring road safety is a shared responsibility and completing a TDC, a mandatory requirement for securing a student permit, is essential," Dawaton stresses.

To bridge this gap, the LTO conducted a nationwide simultaneous free TDC program recently, held across various venues.

The Ilocos Region saw the program's largest turnout yet, with around 1,200 individuals completing the mandatory 15-hour lecture at the Binmaley Evacuation Center in Pangasinan.

"This is the biggest free TDC ever conducted in Region 1," Dawaton proudly announces.

Similar events were simultaneously held in Barangay Sarrat, Ilocos Norte (200 participants); Bantay, Ilocos Sur (300 participants); and San Fernando City, La Union (25 participants).

Dawaton highlights that these participants have gained crucial knowledge to safely operate and navigate roads.

The course covered essential topics like traffic laws, road signs, and defensive driving techniques.

"The lecturer provided comprehensive information that is valuable for new drivers. I hope everyone remembers the lessons and prioritizes safe driving practices," says 19-year-old Jhel Irish Ibañez from Binmaley town.

Ibañez, along with other participants, received certificates – a crucial step towards obtaining a student driver's permit and eventually, a driver's license.

Beyond the free TDC, the initiative also included a medical mission, offering discounted access to essential healthcare services.

This free TDC program is part of the LTO's 112th founding anniversary celebration, with a core focus on fostering responsible drivers for a "New Philippines."

The program is anchored in the vision of "Sa Bagong Pilipinas, Vehiculo at Drayber dapat M.O.D.E.L.O.," which translates to "In the New Philippines, vehicles and drivers must be M.O.D.E.L.O."

This stands for Moderno (modern), Organisado (organized), Disiplinado (disciplined), Eco-friendly, Ligtas (safe), and Operational vehicles and drivers.

Dawaton encourages the public to stay updated on upcoming free TDC schedules by following the Facebook pages of LTO District Offices in the region.

The LTO's unwavering commitment lies in educating the public and advocating for safe driving practices.

By equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate roads safely, this program contributes significantly to building a safer and more inclusive transportation environment for everyone. (JCR/AMB/JCDR/PIA Pangasinan)
