VP Duterte monitors Matatag curriculum implementation in Isabela

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) -- Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte visited two schools  that were piloting the implementation of the education department’s “Matatag” curriculum.

Duerte said the curriculum aims to decongest the basic education competencies and improve the overall performance of schools and learners.

In her visits to Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo National High School in Ramon town and Lanna National High School in Tumauini town, two of the five pilot schools in the Cagayan Valley Region for the revised curriculum implementation, she emphasized the commitment of the government to ensure the smooth implementation and success of the various education-related programs and initiatives.

The Vice President also took the opportunity to have a dialogue with some teachers and parents to gather feedback, issues, and concerns regarding implementing the new curriculum.

“I put a premium on the importance of an excellent education system in shaping the future of the nation and that a gradual change in the curriculum is a step towards elevating the quality of learning and instruction in the country,” Duterte said.

MATATAG stands for “Make the curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, Active and responsible citizens; TAke steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education services and provision facilities; TAke good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusiveness learning, and positive learning environment; and, Give support for teachers to teach better.”

"When I assumed office as DepEd Secretary, we reviewed the curriculum and asked education experts and scholars on how to improve it. I hope parents, teachers, and the community will support it," Duterte said.

Duterte further assured that under her leadership, the department will always be ready to assist with the needs of young learners.

The pilot implementation of the Matatag Curriculum commenced this school year, and four out of the five pilot-implementing schools in Region 2 are in the Isabela schools division. (OTB/MGE/PIA Isabela)
