EDSA Kamuning flyover to undergo major rehab starting May 1

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- Starting May 1, the southbound lane of the EDSA Kamuning flyover will undergo major rehabilitation works.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways-National Capital Region (DPWH-NCR), the southbound lanes of the EDSA Kamuning flyover will be closed to private vehicles to rectify the damages observed in its structure, and prolong the bridge’s lifespan.

One of the scopes of work will focus on the redecking activities on identified spans, which will run up to six (6) months, one and a half lanes at a time, starting with Phase 1 from April 25, 2024 to August 6, 2024 (Spans 1 to 2, fronting GMA Building), while Phase 2 will start on July 15, 2024 to October 25, 2024.

During the repairs, the EDSA Bus Carousel will be allowed to pass through the open lanes in the flyover, while private vehicles may use EDSA service road, and other alternate routes.

The DPWH-NCR promises to open the closed lanes to all types of vehicles by October 25, 2024. Afterwards, the remaining five months of the rehabilitation will be used to strengthen the bridge underneath with carbon fiber, and restrainer, which will not affect traffic flow in the flyover once opened, and the EDSA service road below.

Meanwhile, the Quezon City Government, Traffic Parking and Management Bureau, Police District, and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be in full-force in clearing out road obstructions, and in managing the traffic in the area.

Motorists are advised to utilize the EDSA service road, Mabuhay lanes, and other routes to avoid traffic congestion. As the Kamuning flyover is just one of the 14 critical bridges identified by the Japan Internatioal Cooperation Agency (JICA) that cannot stand against the predicted “The Big One” earthquake.

The DPWH-NCR likewise assures the public that other critical bridges will also be rehabilitated to ensure the safety of the public in Metro Manila. (DPWH-NCR/PIA-NCR)
