Philippines pushes for fairness, collaboration in global science innovation

MANILA, (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) underscored the importance of fair practices and teamwork in promoting science, technology, and innovation (STI) for sustainable development.

This focus, the DOST believes, can benefit all countries, particularly vulnerable populations.

DOST Undersecretary Leah J. Buendia spoke at the 27th session of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) held in Geneva, Switzerland, from April 15 to 19.

Let us continue helping each other, especially the developing countries and the vulnerable sectors,” she said.

During the session, she was elected Vice Chair for the Asia Pacific Group.

Buendia highlighted Philippine initiatives using data for various purposes, including disaster risk reduction, healthcare, medicine, and environmental monitoring via satellite data.

She also emphasized STI responses like the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program, the Malnutrition Reduction Program, the Enhanced Nutribun, and the creation of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Zero Hunger.

The CSTD analyzes pressing issues in STI and their potential contributions to achieving the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Buendia stressed the importance of building trust through fair and equitable mechanisms within this crucial UN intergovernmental forum.

As Vice Chair, Buendia will lead discussions on national science, technology, and innovation policy reviews conducted by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The CSTD Bureau, responsible for coordinating decision-making with member states, consists of a rotating chair and four vice chairs representing regional groups. (PIA-NCR)
