CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- In a concerted effort to bolster the aquaculture sector, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Mimaropa recently dispersed 80,000 fingerlings across the serene lakes of Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro.

According to BFAR, this fisheries stock enhancement activity is a pivotal component of BFAR's Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (BASIL) program, with 50,000 fingerlings finding their new home in Libuao Lake, and 30,000 in Panikian Lake.

Roderick B. Galang and Stephen C. Advincula of the Fisheries Management Regulatory and Enforcement Division, in coordination with Gay Bernardo from the fish hatchery in Naujan, and representatives from the local government of Sablayan, they orchestrated a symphony of conservation and economic empowerment, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future for the lakes and their surrounding communities.

The Basil program aims to bolster the income of local fisherfolks in the long term, offering them increased opportunities to harvest from their respective lakes by rejuvenating the stocks of these bodies of water.

This collaborative effort underscores BFAR's commitment to fostering thriving aquatic ecosystems while uplifting the lives of those who rely on them for their livelihoods. (AS/PIA MIMAROPA/BFAR MIMAROPA)
