DOH launches program to strengthen leprosy management in Mimaropa

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- In order to enhance leprosy control and management in the region, the Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH CHD) Mimaropa, under its Leprosy Control Program (LCP) led by Dr. Andrea Loraine S. Tan, has recently conducted an advanced training program focusing on Leprosy Management and Slit-Skin-Smear techniques.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to update and refine the skills of healthcare professionals in the region in combating leprosy.

The event covered a wide array of topics, from the latest updates on regional leprosy cases to the global strategies aimed at controlling and eventually eliminating the disease.

Keynote speakers at the training included renowned experts such as Dr. Abelaine Venida-Tablizo from the Rizal Medical Center, and Dr. Eugenia M. Tabbu, Teresa E. Roa, and Jerose V. Villasis, each bringing their extensive knowledge and experience in tackling this disease.

These specialists discussed various critical aspects of leprosy management including the history of the disease, current global leprosy strategies as outlined in the 'Global Leprosy Strategy 2021-2030' and effective techniques in diagnosis and treatment such as slit-skin-smear.

A particular focus of the training was on practical demonstrations of Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), a cornerstone in the treatment of leprosy. The participants also delved into the nuances of the Leprosy Control Program Reporting Form Data Base Development, which includes recording and reporting mechanisms that are vital for tracking the disease and assessing the effectiveness of ongoing programs.

Health education and proper counseling of patients were also emphasized as key components in managing leprosy. The trainers discussed strategies to improve patient communication and education, crucial for ensuring compliance with treatment protocols and for reducing stigma associated with the disease.

Another significant aspect of the training covered the prevention and management of disabilities associated with leprosy, an area often overlooked in general healthcare settings.

The trainers also reviewed the referral system, ensuring that all healthcare workers are aware of the proper channels for referring advanced cases to specialized treatment centers. (JJGS/PIA Mimaropa)
