NIA’s intervention brings relief to Lapuyan farmers

LAPUYAN, Zamboanga del Sur (PIA) - The agricultural community of Lapuyan has faced struggles due to water scarcity, leading to diminished harvests and hardship for local farmers. However, hope bloomed anew with the swift action of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA)-9.

NIA officially turned over the newly completed Carpoc-Lubosan Communal Irrigation Project (CIP) Phase II to the Carpoc-Lubosan Irrigators Association (IA), Inc., in Carpoc, this town.

The second phase of the project had a total project cost of P4.6 million under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program-Irrigation Component (CARP-IC) fund. This project involved the construction of three elevated flumes and 945 meters of canal lining.

Alfie F. Alfafara, a farmer in the area, expressed the challenges they endured before NIA's intervention.

(Farming here in Carpoc was very difficult. We were solely reliant on rainwater, which often proved inadequate.)

Arsenio G. Tabanyag, another farmer, highlighted the significant improvement of the irrigation project and their harvests have substantially increased.

(The difference between before and now is very significant. Before, our yield would only reach a maximum of 30 cavans per hectare, but now, with updated irrigation, it sometimes reaches 80-90 cavans.)

The project not only provided much-needed water but also symbolized a lifeline of prosperity for Lapuyan. Jerry Lingating, president of the Irrigators Association, emphasized the broader impact of NIA’s initiative.

(I hope that Phase III will be implemented soon because there are still many flat lands up front still waiting for irrigation. Our fellow farmers in that area also hope to avail themselves of the irrigation. We also hope to be provided with and avail ourselves of machinery and a farm-to-market road by other agencies to easily facilitate the transportation of our products to the highway.)

This infrastructure now irrigates 40 hectares of agricultural land, benefiting 44 farmer-beneficiaries. The construction was carried out under the supervision of the Zamboanga del Sur Irrigation Management Office (ZDS IMO).

NIA-9’s dedication to supporting Lapuyan's farmers remains steadfast. Their prompt action has brought tangible relief to a community struggling with water scarcity, bringing back hope for the future of farming in the area. (NBE/EDT/HTB/PIA-Zamboanga del Sur with reports from NIA9)
