Dapitan honors Rizal: Mayor Jalosjos calls for action, inspiration from National Hero's exile

DAPITAN CITY, Philippines – December 30, 2023 - Mayor Seth Frederick “Bullet” P.  Jalosjos, guest of honor at the 127th anniversary commemoration of Dr. Jose Rizal's martyrdom, urged Dapitanons to embrace the revolutionary spirit of the national hero and use it to propel the city towards its Smart Heritage City vision.

Speaking at the Museo ni Rizal sa Dapitan, under the theme "Rizal: Pundasyon ng Kahapon, Isinasabuhay Ngayon" (Rizal: Foundation of Yesterday, Lived Today), Mayor Jalosjos highlighted Rizal's transformative impact on Dapitan during his exile: "Rizal arrived not as a prisoner, but as a visionary. He saw the canvas of possibility, and built a school, practiced medicine, and wrote with a fire that burned brighter than any exile could extinguish."

Jalosjos emphasized how Rizal's legacy aligns with the city's Smart Heritage City vision: "His actions during his exile offer a blueprint for progress, one that resonates with our administration's aim to become a vibrant hub of innovation, inclusivity, and progress."

He further declared Dapitan's journey as "a national model," showcasing the successful integration of heritage and technology for other communities across the Philippines.

Ms. Gemma Cruz Araneta, former Secretary of the Department of Tourism and a descendent of Rizal's sister Maria Rizal-Cruz, was also present for the ceremony; this is said to be the first time any Rizal family member has attended an event of this kind. "Her presence signifies the enduring spirit of Rizal's vision flowing through generations," Mayor Jalosjos said.

In conclusion, Mayor Jalosjos passionately urged the audience: "Let this day mark not just the commemoration of his martyrdom, but the vibrant continuation of a spirit ignited. Let us be the generation that fulfills the promise of Rizal's dreams, a generation worthy of his sacrifice, a generation that builds a nation where every citizen can stand tall, empowered by the spirit of the man who dared to dream a better future."

The commemoration started with a flag raising ceremony and gun salute, followed by a wreath laying by Mayor Jalosjos, Ms. Araneta, and the Museum curator.

This event underscores Dapitan's commitment to honoring Rizal's legacy and using it as a guiding light for building a brighter future, not only for the city, but for the entire Philippines. (PR)
