DSWD-10 extends food relief to Baroy residents

BAROY, Lanao del Norte (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development Office (DSWD) Field Office-10, in coordination with the local government unit here, has facilitated the distribution of family food packs to 5,000 beneficiaries as part of the food-for-work program.

The beneficiaries have experienced hunger due to the adverse effects of high temperatures on their farming and fishing livelihoods.

“We are struggling with planting and fishing because of the intense heat. We can hardly afford to buy food because our small plot of land has dried up. Fishing is also scarce," Sabina Quisel, a 70-year-old beneficiary, said.

The program prioritizes senior citizens, solo parents, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), who are affected by the warm and dry seasons in the community.

Regional Director Ramel F. Jamen of DSWD-10 emphasized their commitment to delivering social protection programs and services to the most vulnerable and economically disadvantaged population.

During calamities, the DSWD takes the lead in providing immediate relief, including both food and non-food items, to affected individuals and families.

Beneficiaries have actively contributed through a two-day community service involving clean-up drives and clearing of coastal, canal, and drainage areas, which aim to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“I thank the DSWD for this initiative. The food pack I received is a great help for our daily needs, especially during this crisis caused by the extreme heat," Nida Boctolan, a 69-year-old beneficiary, expressed her gratitude for the food-for-work program.

DSWD-10's efforts play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable communities during challenging times. (DSWD-10/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)
