UAE extends aid to Davao de Oro disaster victims

DAVAO DE ORO (PIA) -- More than a month after the tragic landslide in Barangay Masara, 53-year-old Mercedita Odias remains thankful that her family was unharmed by the incident.

Odias recalled that her son was supposed to work that day, but they insisted that the whole family attend a vigil for a departed friend whose wake was in a nearby community. They could have lost one of their two children in the landslide should the son had insisted on working.

Now that the whole Barangay Masara of Maco, Davao de Oro is declared uninhabitable, Odias and 88 other families are living in a temporary relocation dubbed “G-Works Kampo Uno” in Barangay Elizalde in the same town.

Odias emphasized that they are overwhelmed with the assistance given by the government and other non-government organizations, as it sustains them in their daily lives.

“Pasalamat mi og dako kay daghang instrumento ang Ginoo para tabangan mi,” she said.

(We are very thankful that God uses them as instruments to help us.)

On March 17, Odias received a box full of groceries from Mohammed Obaid Alqattam Alzaab, the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Philippines.

Despite losing its residence due to a landslide, 53-year old Mercedita Odias still feels blessed that they are alive and that the government and other people have been supporting them for their recovery.

Alzaab brought 950 grocery boxes during his visit as initial assistance from the UAE government.

“Guided by the directive of our wise leadership, the UAE will continue to make steadfast efforts to provide aid and support to those affected by the different catastrophes in Davao de Oro,” Alzaab stressed, adding that the UAE is always ready to help a friend in times of need.

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian says that the United Arab Emirates is the first country to reach out to their agency and offer assistance to the victims of the calamities in Davao de Oro.

According to Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian, the UAE is the first country to approach him to extend assistance to the victims of the calamities in Davao de Oro.

Gatchalian said that the UAE earmarked around P55 million worth of food packs equivalent to more than 5,000 grocery boxes for Davao de Oro.

“Handang-handa parin silang tumulong until makabangon ang ating mga residente,” he said, indicating more aid would be brought to Davao de Oro soon.

(They are still ready to help until the residents recover from the incident.)

During his tour to Kampo Uno, Alzaab engaged with the residents in the area and even asked Gov. Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga, Congressman Ruwel Peter

Gonzaga, and Maco Mayor Arthur Carlos Voltaire Rimando about the needed requirements for the temporary relocation, such as water, education, and additional tents.

On behalf of the province, Gonzaga expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the ambassador and to the people of the UAE for the assistance.

“The act of gift giving during the observance of the month of Ramadan has even been made more meaningful because our Muslim brothers and sisters have shown how generous they are, how caring, and how loving they are to the rest of humanity,” the governor said.

She also said that aside from Kampo Uno, the government is also preparing Kampo Dos in a lot from Apex Mining Corporation, where 123 families can be accommodated.

She said that more are still to be relocated since, aside from Barangay Masara, four puroks of Barangay Mainit in Maco are also declared uninhabitable by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB).

In The latest MGB report, Gonzaga said that the province is also looking for resettlement sites aside from the areas in Pangibasan and Kinuban, which were identified by Mayor Rimando as among the locations that the municipal government is planning to purchase for relocation. (MLU/PIA Davao de Oro)
