Men play crucial role in promoting gender equality, advocate says

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) -- As part of the National Women's Month celebration, Gender Advocates Normin, Inc. (GANI) hosted the GAD Continuous Enhancement event dubbed "Initializing Men Opposed to Violence Everywhere" (MOVE) at the 4th Infantry Division (4ID), Philippine Army (PA) headquarters on March 15 to raise awareness and initiate action among male personnel to combat violence against women.

National Telecommunications Commission Regional Director Teodoro Buenavista, Jr., the resource speaker for the event, emphasized the importance of men's involvement in promoting gender equality and preventing violence against women and added that the Philippine Commission on Women created the MOVE in 2006 for the said cause.

"How many years has it been? 18 years. It's been a long time. That organization is composed of men, of course—men who are suspected to be perpetrators, which is logical, especially when we are drunk," Buenavista said.

Highlighting the critical role of men in fostering a culture of respect and equality, the regional director emphasized that the success of initiatives like MOVE depends on the active participation and commitment of men. He further stressed that protecting women's rights is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative for society.

Reflecting on the prevalence of domestic violence, Buenavista underscored the need for concerted efforts to address this issue. He shared insights from documented cases of domestic violence, emphasizing the devastating impact on families and communities, and called for greater awareness and action to support victims and prevent future incidents.

On the legislative framework for women's rights, the regional director highlighted the significance of the Magna Carta of Women, enacted in 2009 under Republic Act 9710. He commended the efforts of then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in championing the law.

"The Magna Carta of Women seeks to eliminate discrimination against women by recognizing, protecting, fulfilling, and promoting the rights of Filipino women in all spheres of society," Buenavista added.

He also addressed the importance of providing support and protection to women in the workplace, particularly in cases of gynecological disorders, and emphasized the need for policies that ensure equitable treatment and access to resources for women.

For her part, GANI President Maj. Daisy Baguio urged the agencies to create a world where everyone feels safe, valued, and heard.

"As we come together to champion this cause, let us remember that change starts with each one of us. Through our collective efforts, we can create a ripple effect that will resonate far beyond these walls. Let us stand united in our commitment to eradicating violence in all its forms and building a society where respect, empathy, and understanding are the pillars of our interactions.

The GAD Continuous Enhancement also served as a platform for reaffirming the commitment of male personnel of the 4ID to be agents of positive change in the fight against gender-based violence. GANI further targets mobilizing the MOVE in all government agencies and even private organizations. (RTP/PIA-10)
