Mangrove crab hatchery opens in Capiz

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- A Mangrove Crab Hatchery-Nursery Facility was launched in Barangay Agojo in Panay town to produce and sustain a consistent supply of mangrove crab seedstocks demand for farming.

The Capiz State University (CapSU) initiated the launching last month of the mangrove crab, which also refers to cultured mud crab species for aquaculture production.

The initiative aims to establish and oversee a prototype nursery facility that will demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of a commercial-scale mangrove crab hatchery nursery system.

This P12.8-million project being implemented by CapSU, in cooperation with the local government unit of Panay town, is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).

Another DOST-PCAARRD-funded project with CapSU is a research study on coconut hybridization in Western Visayas which had its inception meeting last February.

During the program, DOST Provincial Science and Technology Director for Capiz Juafe Abareles underscored the collaborative efforts of partner agencies and stakeholders united by a common vision of sustainable aquaculture and socio-economic progress.

“This initiative has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders united by a shared vision of sustainable aquaculture and socio-economic development. This interdisciplinary collaboration indicates that the innovation ecosystem thrives in Capiz,” Abareles noted, referring to DOST- PCAARRD, Panay, CapSU, and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC).

The facility is expected to provide a solution to the dependence of the local mangrove crab Industry on the supply of wild-caught mangrove crab by increasing the availability of hatchery-produced seed stocks.

Other local crab growers also get their seedstocks from SEAFDEC and other hatcheries.

The local government unit has thanked the DOST – PCAARRD and CapSU for establishing the project in the municipality.

"What I see in this partnership is mutual benefit and economic prosperity. The DOST PCAARRD and CAPSU will find their technology deployed and tested in this area and learn in the process," Panay Mayor Vicente Bermejo said. (AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz)
