ILOILO CITY (PIA6) – The city government of Iloilo will soon close down its sanitary landfill to give way to a waste-to-energy (WtE) facility which will be constructed under a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.

The Iloilo City government recently held a ceremonial contract exchange with the Metro Pacific Water (MPW) – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Metro Pacific Water Investments Corporation (MPWIC) – for the construction of the P2.3 billion Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility (ISWMF) in a move towards a sustainable urban development.

The facility is likewise expected to generate 3.5 megawatts of power to augment the 10 megawatts for the desalination plant, which can produce additional water supply at a lower cost for the residents.

Treñas stressed that the project represents an important building block in establishing Iloilo City as a major investment hub, noting that as a model in PPP, the city is implementing a new technology to “create value from waste streams, further cementing its leadership in sustainable waste management in the country.”

“During the negotiations for the final terms of the proposal, both sides worked together towards a common objective, exploring new ways to address environmental issues, show flexibility and agree on tangible results that are important for businesses and the Ilonggo community,” the city mayor added.
