Regional info officers urged to build stronger ties in communicating gov’t programs

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- Members of the Association of Regional Information Officers in Western Visayas (ARIO-WV) were urged to build stronger linkages in communicating government activities, programs, projects, and services.

“We come together to continue and ensure sustainability and strong linkages of all government agencies, expand the network, and align our key strategies in furthering development communication through each one of you,” said Philippine Information Agency regional head Cheryl B. Amor.

Amor further recognized the vital role of development communication in promoting government advocacies and programs to reach grassroots communities.

“We are glad to share with you one of the PIA’s significant accomplishments which is the commencement of the revitalization efforts to vocalize and capacitate members of the communities of vital information—the mobilization of the Barangay Information Officers (BIOs),” she said in her message.

To date, there are already four BIO networks in the region where they have sworn and committed to barangay information dissemination, particularly in Bago City and Victorias City, Negros Occidental, Pontevedra town in Capiz, and recently in Kalibo, Aklan.

She added that these organized BIOs serve as counterparts in disseminating information and communication efforts to the grassroots communities.

Likewise, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Regional Senior Economic Development Specialist August Melody A. Andong presented to the members of ARIO-WV the Philippine Development Plan and the Regional Development Plan 2023-2028.

Andong emphasized that the PDP 2023-2028 is a plan for deep economic and social transformation to reinvigorate job creation and accelerate poverty reduction by steering the economy back on a high-growth path.

Meanwhile, she noted that the RDP 2023-2028 is the region's socioeconomic development blueprint that will accompany the PDP in materializing the goals for Western Visayas.

“Both of these plans will serve as guides for the government communication sector, through the information officers of various government agencies and instrumentalities, to identify priority areas

for communication that would be significant in making the Filipino people aware of the government programs and projects under such plans,” Andong stressed.

Updates from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Iloilo on the effects of the El Niño phenomenon were also given by Weather Specialist Ferdinand Rubin Jr.

Rubin provided a forecast of the effects of the El Niño phenomenon on the country which he reported would likely persist until May.

Aside from the current climate, Rubin also noted that below-normal rainfall in the initial part of the year exposes the probability of a La Niña phenomenon starting in the months of June to August this year.

The topic has provided the government information officers with some insights into what communication efforts, through their respective agencies' mandates, will focus on effective adaptation and efficient recovery efforts for the affected sectors in the region.

These activities formed part of the recent general assembly, which aimed to advance the PIA’s efforts to strengthen the information network in the region and build wider linkages for communicating critical information among communities. (AAL/AGP/PIA 6)
