PBBM leads activation of P67.98-B Cebu-Negros-Panay power system

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) -- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the energization of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ P67.89 billion Cebu-Negros-Panay 230 kilovolt backbone project in a ceremony at the NGCP substation in Barangay Mansilingan in Bacolod City.

The CNP backbone project, composed of CNP Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 and the Negros-Panay interconnection Project Line 2, is intended to strengthen the grid and improve the reliability of power transmission among the islands of Cebu, Negros, and Panay with the construction of a new 230kV transmission backbone to support the existing 138kV facilities.

“And it will help resolve the power supply challenges that have plagued Negros and Panay sub-grids, and which have caused very serious economic setbacks for the region.  So, the CNP will also address the surging energy demands in the area and propel the socio-economic advancement of Regions VI and VII to new heights,“ Marcos said in his message.

The CNP consists of 670 transmission towers spanning 442 circuit kilometers of overhead lines, 98.9 circuit kilometers of submarine cables with 10 new substations, and the expansion of two existing major substations.

“By enhancing connectivity and stability in the transmission network through CNP, we are not only addressing immediate power challenges in the Negros and Panay but also laying the foundation for a more sustainable and robust energy for the entire country,” the president said.

Marcos assured the NGCP of government support - particularly from the Department of Energy and the Energy Regulatory Commission – to address roadblocks and bottlenecks making processes easier and faster and bringing these transmission lines into play, online for the immediate effect to be felt especially for the industries in the area.

“And let us— we always consider it that way. It is a shared endeavor. It is not a project solely of NGCP, it is not solely a project of the Department of Energy, it is always a joint project and we bring all our resources and all our relevant assets to the problem,” Marcos added.

The president also urged stakeholders in the Visayas to strategically identify suitable locations that will host new baseload generation plants, as well as renewable energy and energy storage systems that will bolster energy sufficiency and sustainability in Negros and Panay Islands.

“I encourage private generators to invest in the Negros and Panay sub-grids so that the region can meet its energy demands and ensure self-sufficiency in the long run.  We have taken a big step in, today, when we opened this transmission network in making this more attractive to other private investors to come in, to help us with the problem, and to bring their capacity in improving the transmission lines, even our generation,” the president added.

Meanwhile, NGCP President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony Almeda, in his message, said the project was the third major accomplishment of NGCP under the Marcos administration, including the Hermosa-San Jose 500kV Transmission Line in Luzon and the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection, all done within the past 12 months.

“The completion of this project was not without challenges. We extend our appreciation to the President for his untiring support for NGCP, and to the private and public institutions who worked with us to realize yet another landmark project. The collective efforts of everyone involved have been instrumental in driving this project forward and bringing us to this occasion,” Almeda added.

Marcos told NGCP to remain steadfast in the drive to ensure the timely completion of the remaining major transmission projects to bolster the stability of our power grid.

“And I trust that the NGCP will always fulfill its duty and obligation of safeguarding the resiliency and efficiency of our energy infrastructure. It forms the bedrock- this is how important NGCP is. NGCP and our transmission network are the bedrock of our nation’s progress and well-being,” Marcos added. (AAL/EAD-PIA6)
