DENR, Isabela City Agri Office hold rapid assessment on marine treasures

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) – The  Isabela City Agriculture’s Office's Environment and Natural Resources Division (CAgO-ENRD), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region IX,  and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Zamboanga City recently conducted a comprehensive Corals and Fish Rapid Assessment and a Seagrass Community Rapid Assessment across six locations within Isabela City for its marine ecosystem and its conservation.

The Isabela City Agriculture’s Office acknowledges that by studying the coral, fish, and seagrass communities, valuable insights into the city's marine ecosystem can be gained. This includes information about biodiversity, habitat value, ecosystem services, economic and social significance, threats, and conservation status. These findings are crucial for understanding the health and well-being of the marine environment and for implementing effective conservation strategies.

The collected data will serve as a critical baseline for future conservation and protection initiatives. This baseline will guide efforts to safeguard Isabela City's precious marine resources, ensuring their continued survival and prosperity. By having this comprehensive understanding of the marine ecosystem, the city can make informed decisions on how to best conserve and protect its valuable marine life.

The assessment involved visual inspections of coral reefs and fish species identification by DENR Region IX and CENRO ZC experts. Underwater transect lines were established to capture details such as coral cover, coral health, and fish species abundance.

In addition, seagrass communities were assessed by placing quadrats to determine species, coverage, and species composition. The CAgO-ENRD provided essential surface and technical support, overseeing underwater activities and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the operation.

This collaborative effort represents a significant step towards understanding and protecting Isabela City's vibrant marine ecosystem. Through the combined efforts of these organizations, the city is taking a proactive approach to preserving its marine resources for future generations. The organizations hope that this comprehensive assessment will undoubtedly contribute to the long-term conservation and sustainable management of Isabela City's marine environment.
