Panay town brings back community-based organic farming

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- The Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, in partnership with the municipal government of Maayon in the province of Capiz, has tapped farmers to develop and enhance organic farming in the town.

Through the School for Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) Philippines, 10 farmers from Maayon town became part of the pioneer batch that underwent one-month intensive training in organic agriculture production (OAP) in Angat, Bulacan.

Archie Jan Latoza, from the upland barangay of Canapian, is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture majoring in Animal Science and is the team leader of the Maayon Resource and Development Center Enchanted Farm (MRDCEF) in Brgy. Tapulang, Maayon.

Latoza shared that despite being a graduate of an agriculture-related course, he admitted to only having limited knowledge about organic farming. When he participated in the training in January 2024, he said his knowledge of OAP had increased.

Aside from the training conducted by SEED Philippines, the scholars were able to pass the National Assessment for Organic Agriculture Production National Certificate (NC) II conducted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Bulacan.

Latoza said that after passing their training and assessment, they went back to Maayon town to complete their two-month community-based training where they applied their learning from SEED Philippines through the establishment of their community food farm at MRDCEF.

“What was discussed between the SEED Philippines and Maayon local government unit (LGU) is that the SEED Philippines will provide the capital that will be used in the farm. The LGU will assist in the transportation and accommodation of the students for two months in Brgy. Tapulang,” Latoza said in Hiligaynon.

He stated that aside from the financial support, the land area for the MRDCEF in Brgy. Tapulang is owned by the LGU.

Maayon public information officer Ronjel Delfin said that the purpose of the partnership with Gawad Kalinga is to target the town’s forest community and to bring back organic farming in the municipality.

“We need to bring back organic farming, especially with the hot climate conditions experienced and high prices of farm produce," Delfin said in Hiligaynon, adding that the LGU is also looking forward to offering OAP NC II through TESDA for the marginalized sector.

Other than the OAP training with the 10 farmers, the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation will conduct Values Formation Training in May and Bayani Challenge in August.

The SEED Philippines believes that, together with the Maayon LGU, they have a harmonious vision for uplifting the country's agriculture sector through sustainable agriculture and agri-entrepreneurship.

Further, SEED Philippines added that 10 beneficiaries will finish the program and are scheduled to graduate in Bacolod City on May 3, 2024. (AGP/PLF/PIA Capiz)
