GAD advocates in Antique urged to ‘walk the talk’

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- Gender and Development (GAD) champions in this province were urged to “walk the talk” or transform their words into action in promoting and securing gender equality and inclusivity.

GAD Inter-Agency Committee (IAC) co-chair and Antique Development Foundation executive director Rhoda Pon-an, in a radio interview, said that advocates need to live up to the values of women’s equality and empowerment each day.

Pon-an stressed that it is never enough to simply commit or pledge support to GAD-related initiatives, because despite significant progress in the past years, gender-based violence and discrimination are still being reported.

She noted that organizations may regularly include and espouse women’s equality and empowerment in their missions, development plans, and activities but there remain gender gaps that need to be filled.

This means that the work towards this goal continues and needs to be reinforced, hence her call for stakeholders to work together to address gender issues in society that obstruct collective growth and development.

She added that the annual National Women’s Month (NWM) celebration is an opportunity not to be missed by women and gender champions to advance their cause for equality and inclusivity, especially since government mechanisms are in place in support of this global movement.

National Women’s Month is celebrated every March to highlight women's important role in society and their contributions to nation-building, amplifying the message “What men can do, women can too.”

The NWM celebration is centered on the recurring theme “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society” introduced in 2023 which signifies the positive affirmation of the advocacy and a call to action by the entire society.

This year, NWM seeks to eliminate gender norms and ensure women’s access to equitable opportunities that are not hindered by cultural stereotypes, as enshrined in the subtheme “Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan.”

The NWM celebration in this province kicked off with a "One Billion Rising (OBR) 2024" dance performance which intends to echo solidarity against gender-based violence, with Gov. Rhodora J. Cadiao leading the act and provincial government employees rallying behind her.

Meanwhile, Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) officer-in-charge Bienvinido Nallos, Jr. said that ordinary citizens can also become GAD champions of their own, nurturing women’s rights and promoting empowerment.

According to Nallos, one can start at home by giving due recognition and respect to the women in the family who do valuable things often neglected and shadowed in a patriarchal society.

The official added that inequalities have no place in this evolving society where opportunities for growth and development are open for everyone regardless of race, gender, religion, political affiliation, or any other identity group.

Nallos also made sure the provincial government offices’ adherence and strict compliance to the 5% budget allocation for GAD-related programs and activities were not only applied in the province but across the country.

In 2023, based on the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) Report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Philippines remained the leading Asian country in narrowing the gender gap, attributable to its nationwide GAD program. (AGP/BPS/PIA Antique)
