TESDA skills training empowers PWDs

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- At a very young age, Gina Barnizo of Barangay Roxas noticed that her eyesight was becoming blurry. She could hardly recognize anybody at a distance. Her poor eyesight has made it difficult for her to do even the simplest household chores.

Now 29, Barnizo joined a skills training course on Pot holder and Rug Making organized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and the Tapaz municipal government.

“I'm very thankful for the free training given to us because this will help us find a job and allow us to do simple things in our household,” Barnizo said in Hiligaynon.

Another beneficiary, 36-year-old Neniel Gicole from Barangay Taslan with physical and hearing impairment, also expressed gratitude to the TESDA and the LGU.

Barnizo and Gicole are among the 17 persons with disabilities (PWD) who recently graduated from TESDA’s training on Potholder and Rug Making.

All 17 of them engaged in hands-on activities that aimed to enhance their craftsmanship and provide them with valuable skills to open doors for potential livelihood opportunities.

With the commitment to inclusivity and empowerment of the local government unit of Tapaz town, they aim to provide practical skills and promote economic independence in the PWD community.

“We are grateful to TESDA for giving us this training that is beneficial in our everyday activities and for preparing us for the future,” Gicole stated in Hiligaynon.

Aside from the skills workshop for the PWD, the Tapaz LGU and TESDA also conducted another skills training program for the immediate family members of the PWDs.

The training workshop is on Consumer Electronics Appliances Repair and after which, 19 trainees will receive an NC II on Electronic Product Assembly and Servicing (EPAS).

“Highlighting the role of education and skills development will create inclusive growth and provide equal opportunities for all members of the society,” Palomar added. (AGP/PLF/PIA Capiz)
