TESDA food and beverage skills training empowers women

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- Gina Ginoy of Barangay Jamul-awon in Panay town is among the women from the province who took the food and beverage services training offered by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

As a full-time mother of two, she sells snacks and “kakanins” in schools to earn extra.

“Every weekday while my older daughter is in school, I sell different types of kakanins and snacks. That is why when I learned that the TESDA is giving free skills training course on donut making, I was excited to join as it is my long-time plan to sell donuts and make homemade cakes,” Ginoy stated in Hiligaynon.

She also shared that, as a graduate of TESDA's Food and Beverages Services program,  this paved the way for  her to get a job offer from a local resort in Roxas City.

However, Ginoy chose to be a full-time mother and used some of her knowledge of food and beverages services in selling snacks.

In addition to the skills training on donut making, the TESDA through the Dumalag Vocational-Technical School (DVTS) also conducted skills training on table skirting, flower arrangement, and entrepreneurship with bookkeeping to the Binantuan Women Association in Brgy. Binantuan, Panay town.

The skills training was organized by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Election Officer of Panay town and Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers President Ruthche Calixterio in time for the Women's Month celebration.

All of the participants in the day-long activity were women.

“Even way back, empowering women especially housewives has been my life’s advocacy. Growing up I saw a lot of women that are stuck in their houses, relying on their husbands. That is why I help various women associations to be accredited and conduct various seminars to empower them,” Calixterio said as she also plans to help in the registration of these organized associations with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Moreover, DVTS Vocational School Administrator III Revic Frebaldos said that aside from the skills training in Panay town, they also conducted various trainings for women in the towns of Dumalag and Dumarao in celebration of National Women’s Month.

Frebaldos stated that more or less they have 500 participants in the skills training for the Women’s Month Celebration and some of the participants were invited to join the culminating activity in Dumalag town last March 25 to receive their training certificates from the TESDA-DVTS.

“For our Women’s Month Celebration we have catered housewives, solo parents, persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Dumarao town, and we also have participants in Dumalag town who were displaced workers as clients,” Frebaldos added, reiterating that the skills training is useful in empowering women in the society.
