Western Visayas info officers, local officials urged to widen grassroots reach

KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) -- Information officers of local government units in Western Visayas and the Sangguniang Bayan members of Aklan were briefed on the legal basis and functions of Barangay Information Officers (BIO), an initiative to widen the grassroots reach of the Philippine Information Agency 6. 

PIA Regional Head Cheryl B. Amor outlined the duties of BIOs as information front liners in disseminating information to the public, managing communication channels, and supporting local government initiatives. 

“Labanan natin ang fake news.  Ang mga Barangay Information Officers natin ay ang mga Maritess and Tolits of timely, accurate, reliable, and truthful information sa ating mga barangay,” Amor told participants both online and face-to-face.

(Let us fight fake news. Our Barangay Information Officers will be the official Maritess and Tolits of timely, accurate, reliable, and truthful information in our barangays.)

PIA Western Visayas  together with the Provincial Government of Aklan through its Aklan Information Center, along with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Aklan Public Information Officers Association (APIOA), and the Provincial Government of Aklan, held the briefing to strengthen the development communication network of government communicators in the region particularly in Aklan province.

Aklan Provincial Administrator Selwyn C. Ibaretta, representing Aklan Gov. Jose Enrique Miraflores, welcomed the participants and highlighted the responsibilities of BIOs in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance at the barangay level. 

DILG Aklan LGOO Steven Jay Abian, during the briefing, emphasized the provisions of DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2017-165, which provides the framework for and enjoins barangay captains in designating respective BIOs. 

A total of 80 information officers from the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental participated in the briefing virtually. (AGP/SQP/PIA Aklan with reports from Coleen Idemne- ASU OJT)
